I recently sent an email to my list of subscribers with the following subject line:
Warning: You Will Not Get Results UNLESS You DO This.
As a health + fitness coach, I knew that some people would immediately open that email expecting me to reveal the holy grail of weight loss secrets. And I also knew that some people would read that email + feel disappointed after realizing how ridiculously simple my solution to weight loss was.
Because literally the answer to the whole ‘what must I do in order to lose weight’ question is so obvious that most people just skip over it completely…
By now, your curiosity may be getting the best of you + you too may be wondering- what could possibly be so simple to-do and yet overlooked by so many people?

Don’t worry, friend. I don’t plan on peaking your interest only to leave you hanging. That same email went on to say the following:
“If you’re anything like me, then you frantically opened this email wondering, WHAT IS THE THING I MUST DO?!
It’s so simple that you’re going to have an eye-rolling moment for a second…but seriously, hear me out.
See, at this point, I’ve helped a lot of individuals reach their fitness goals. And I can tell you that the most important factor that will determine whether you’ll get results…
…has nothing to do with how much weight you want to lose.
…is not defined by how busy your schedule is.
…And certainly isn’t dependent on how old you are or what sort of genes you have.
It’s this: You MUST take action.
You can’t make progress on your fitness journey until you START.
*Let the I-already-knew-that eye-rolling commence!*
It may seem obvious, but so many of us women never start a fitness journey because we think that we need more time to get ready; we feel like we need more knowledge + a better understanding of fitness.
Other times, we simply don’t start because we’re afraid…
We’re afraid of adding even one more thing to our already full to-do list. We’re afraid of over-extending ourselves, creating more overwhelm in our stressed-out lives.
But let me be the first to tell you that improving your health doesn’t have to be scary. You see, when you take care of yourself, every area of your life improves.
When your body is fully nourished, there’s so much more of yourself that you’re able to give to others:
- You can become a better, more patient mother to your little ones.
- You be a healthier, happier partner to your spouse.
- You can be an energetic, more productive version of yourself at work.
All it takes is one decision- because changing your life starts with changing yourself!
Perhaps by now I have convinced you to start a weight loss journey. So naturally, the next question you’re wondering is how exactly do you know if you’re actually taking action on this decision?
Simple, you track your efforts, not just your accomplishments (i.e. pounds or inches lost).

If you want to know if you’re making progress toward your health goals, then it’s important to track the actual steps you are taking to get there.
You’ll find that this strategy is important for 3 Powerful Reasons:
1). Keeps You Accountable
Especially when the goal is big, like in weight loss, there can be a lot of little steps that have an effect on how well we accomplish our goal. It can be easy to get bogged down with the plan and skip a few of the ‘small’ things every once in a while- because really, how much does it truly matter?
But we become lax once and then twice and then pretty soon we’ve convinced ourselves entirely that that one step- something as simple as taking a daily multi-vitamin- doesn’t have that much effect on our progress so why not skip it entirely…
After a while we begin to wonder why we’re not making progress, when in reality, we have deviated so far from the original plan that it’s not even the same plan anymore.
When you stop doing the ‘little things’, that’s when the big things lose chance of ever happening.
Those small, seemingly insignificant steps that in the grand scheme of things appear to not have very much effect on our overall results are what will ultimately bring us closer to our goal- the trick is that they have to be completed on a consistent basis.
Accountability is tough stuff- It means revealing our weaknesses + let’s be honest, nobody wants to do that. But it can also be rewarding because it teaches us the art of ‘follow-through’.
2). Allows You to Stay in Control
Losing weight, no matter the number can be a daunting process. Despite how much we’d like for it to come off all at once, our bodies just don’t work that way. Trust me, the only way you’re going to lose 10 pounds in forty-eight hours is if you have food poisoning (and even then, that’s not sustainable or pleasant!).
As much as we’d like control over how quickly our bodies respond to our new healthier habits, that isn’t always the case. By focusing on our efforts rather than our accomplishments, we shift focus onto something that we can control.
We may not be able to control how our bodies respond to the new healthy habits we are acquiring, but we can control the food choices we make, the nutrients we provide to our bodies, the workouts we complete, etc.
While it can be frustrating to not see the scale budge from week to week, we can, however, feel encouraged tracking other numbers that matter. After all, logging 3 workout sessions this week is something to celebrate!
That encouragement could be the extra little motivation you need to keep kicking butt with your fitness plan this time around.
3. Action Teaches You What You Need to Know
You learn more by taking action than by not taking action. Period. So often we are afraid of doing the ‘wrong things’ that we just don’t do anything at all.
But even doing the wrong things is a lesson learned on what not to do. It’s a step closer to realizing the right things to do. More importantly, it leaves you with the knowledge of ‘okay, this isn’t working, I need to readjust’.
One of my favorite quotes happens to be about failure:
“ Would you like me to give you the formula for success? It’s quite simple, really. Double your rate of failure… You’re thinking of failure as the enemy of success. But it isn’t at all. You can be discouraged by failure- or you can learn from it. So go ahead and make mistakes. Make all you can. Because, remember that’s where you’ll find success. On the other side of failure. “
It’s hard to argue with this philosophy. We can sit here, reading all the information on the Internet that we want these days. One blog post may argue that it only takes three exercises for Instagram-worthy glutes + another may cite that it takes at least six movements- but how do you know until you try?
Track your efforts, not your accomplishments!
Remember regular efforts lead to accomplishments. If you focus on little, day-by-day steps the big stuff will take care of itself.
